NaNoWriMo Progress, Day 20

Notes:

• When I got up this morning, I had nothing. Zip. Zilch. I had the word Twilight and a possible world to set a story in, and it's a nice world . . . but I had no characters, no plot, no events. Just the idea of a setting. The only line I had of a story was this: "Welcome to Twilight!" I typed this, and I looked at it. And I looked at it some more. And then, I looked at it again. And I deleted it. That's all I had. Hours went by and suddenly, my subconscious poked his head out from wherever he'd been hiding and said, "Talent." And the world, character, and story popped into my head. I took another hour or so to cement it, and then started typing. It still amazes me when this happens, but I am certainly not going to look a gift muse in the mouth.


• "T Is for Talent" is complete at 3622 words. 3622 very hard-won words, I might add. I had a good idea, but I kept having to reign in my character because he wanted to whine. Silly Tyler.


• "Talent" owes its existence to 1984, A Brave New World, Logan's Run, The Giver, Jungian psychology, the Myers-Briggs, and the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory. As you might have guessed, it's a dystopia. :)


• After I finished Talent, I went back and wrote another scene in "B Is for Bard." I'm slowly working my way through that one to figuring out just how I'm going to get the bard and the king out of their mutual problem without harming either of them. If I figure out a way. :)


• After that scene, I went to "F Is for Fangs that Are Sunk in Your Leg" and added two more scenes onto that one, setting up the pivotal scene of the story, which comes next. After that, it should all wind down and I'll be able to cross that one off my list.


• As of today, I crossed over another personal milestone. Last year's NaNoWriMo novel got to 78000+ words during November, but I continued working on it until it was completed in February of 2011. The final total of words for Killing Time was 92561 words. Today I hit 98972 words, which makes this collection the second longest connected anything I've ever written. I have 111,800 words written in the first two books of my Urban Fantasy series. But that's taken me two years and most of that will be thrown out.


• Character names: Tyler Norris, the main character; Trina, Toni, and <unnamed>, who are girls he's interested in at one point or another; Tricia Waterman, an official who can't help him with his problem; Aaron Tunstall, Tricia's boss who does.


• Interesting things I had to look up: Jungian psychology, Myers-Briggs, Strong-Campbell. For Bard: medieval cutlery, food, and other dining accoutrements, trenchers. For Fangs: I need a word to describe something that is neither animal, nor vegetable, nor fungus but that shows features of all three.


• Genre: Dystopian Science Fiction
