A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed this new podcast and gave it a glowing review. I listened to it a couple more times before the newest episode, "Huntress", was released. I just finished listening to it between tasks at work.

Wow. This is a pure vampire story. But not like Anne Rice or Buffy: The Vampire Slayer or even Laurell K. Hamilton. I liked this because it was clear to me that the main character, Morgan Drauling, was a person who happened to be a vampire rather than a vampire who used to be a person. There's a big difference, and one that's all-too-often ignored in genre literature. Especially genre literature that devolves into "vamporn" *cough* Laurell K. Hamilton *cough*.

It reminded me, just a bit, of the old TV series "Forever Knight," which I really liked and which also nicely handled that hard-to-walk line of vampires as beasts...but also as people, with intact consciences that conflict with their need to feed. On us.

The story itself is compelling. It starts with Morgan rising and getting ready to go out for dinner. Literally. You think it's going one place, and then it takes a left turn into something else entirely...and then it takes another left turn into something else entirely. Move over, Laurell. Move over, Anne. :)

You could listen just for the story and it would be worth it, but if I didn't mention the performance of Leann Mabry as Morgan Drauling, I would be remiss. She has her own podcast—which I don't listen to yet—called Tag in the Seam. She has a fantastic voice. She brings so much depth to this performance. I could probably listen to her read the phone book and enjoy it.

Once again, the sound effects add ambiance and lend realism to some of the scenes, but without being intrusive.

Make no mistake: This is a performance, not someone reading a bedtime story.

But bedtime stories were never quite like this. :)

So, anyway...go listen. The first episode was "Welcome to Metamor City" and was from the POV of a rookie cop on his first day in the city. "Huntress" is from the POV of the vampire chief medical examiner of Metamor City. I'm eagerly awaiting episode 3 to see what else lies in store.
