According to what I've been able to find online from Professor Google:

Flash: a work of 100 to 1000 words
Short story: a work of more than 1000 words but under 7,500 words
Novelette: a work of at least 7,500 words but under 17,500 words
Novella: a work of at least 17,500 words but under 40,000 words
Novel: 40,000+ words
Or, expressed in a more compact way:
Words: 100 < Flash <= 1000 < Short Story < 7500 <= Novelette < 17500 <= Novella < 40000 <= Novel < ∞
Note: These figures are extremely subjective and various sources set them differently. This one appealed to me, so I went with it. Your mileage may certainly vary.

This means Necromancer (I'll go ahead and use italics instead of quotes) has already passed "short story" and will be in the novella range by the time I finish chapter 6. And there is a long way to go. So, novel. I chose 60,000 words as a goal because it feels like I'm about 1/4 of the way done. That may change.
Project working title: Necromancer
New words: 433
Current total words: 15362
Goal: 60000

Reason for stopping: Lunch ended. :)

Notes:
  1. I identified two characters who have to die for the story...

  2. ...which means I need to introduce one more so I can kill him/her, too. I'd say more but that would give away plot points.

  3. I know how the main protagonist avoids death when the antagonist strikes, but not the other two. Yet.

  4. The characters in chapter 6 are quite different than they were in chapter 1. I smell massive rewrites in my future.

In other news, I think I have another idea for a story set in this same world with some of the same characters, and it's novel-length, too. If I can come up with a plot...I might have a NaNoWriMo novel in mind....

I was going to say, the villain needs three bodies for his evil magic ritual. : )
