I'm charting my daily progress on NaNoWriMo. Since you may or may not care, I'll kindly hide it behind a cut. Thanks for taking the time. :)

Notes:
  • It would seem that I somehow managed to "finish" and "win" NaNoWriMo in only 8 days.

  • "H Is for Haunted" stands unfinished at 5309 words. And every word I managed to type was grueling. I didn't have much more than a vague notion of what I wanted this story to be. I knew it was going to be a ghost story, and I wanted it to be a slight twist and be from the ghost's POV. I had notes written with all kinds of ideas, but none of them really took hold. So I went with the first note: 'the first part of the story should be about how he dies.' So my first sentence is: "Duke Henry of Norbridge died in agony, mouth gagged and hands tied, castrated and slit crotch to sternum by a jealous mistress." And it got more gruesome from there, revealing plots within plots and eventually involving practically everyone he trusted in a conspiracy to kill him. Then I thought to myself, "Self, if I were murdered that way, my ghost would want revenge." So the rest of the story (so far) is Henry figuring out how to get even with every one of his murderers, even though he can't affect the material world much, at least not at the beginning. He gains more power as the story goes on, and then the ending occurred to me at some point. After I have Henry decide just how he's going to do away with the final conspirator, his career as a ghost will end. But something else will open up.

  • Character names: Henry. It is the only name I used in the whole story so far other than his son Michael.

  • Interesting things I had to look up: Not a damned thing. I just winged it all the way. There are probably all kinds of things wrong with how I'm using noble titles and how much land and holdings they would have had, when the various crusades were, how the Catholic church worked during the medieval period (I just went with 'corrupt as hell'), and everything else.

  • Genre: Dark Fantasy

This table shows each story and how many words I have written on it, regardless of the daily count. Titles or letters in red ("tomato") are ones where I'm not sure, yet, what the story will be.

I am not (and never will) nano-ing. But I was pleased that at the cafe tonight I wrote 2500 words or so. This is well beyond my personal Tuesday night best.
