Those of you who know me or who have read this journal for very long have no doubt heard/seen me bitch, moan, and complain about how sick and tired I am of phones that aren't phones and do every damned thing other than make phone calls.

And you've probably also heard/seen me clutch, Gollum-like, at my existing, old-tech AT&T GoPhone (pay as you go), and heard/seen me bitch, moan, and complain at how the exorbitant amounts being charged monthly by my former carriers were nothing short of highway robbery, and that my pay-as-you-go plan was costing me less per month than I had ever paid under a standard plan.

But you may also have heard/seen me say that when I was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 'smart phone' arena, I would dive in all the way.

Behold: My new Motorola Droidx. It arrives in a few days. Those of you with my existing cell number will not have to change anything unless, for some unknown reason, Verizon is not able to wrest the number from AT&T's greedy clutches.

I chose both the phone and Verizon Wireless because they were rated high by Consumer Reports for the things I will use them for. And my mother has Verizon and I liked voice quality of her phone when I tried it out last month. And my friends with Android phones like them and have recommended them highly. And Obi-Wan said "This is the droid you're looking for." And then there was a hand gesture and...I don't remember much after that, but hey, new phone! :)

So. All of you who have been hounding me to come into the 21st century? Can stop it, now. :)

Why today? I finally made the phone call that took my balance on the GoPhone down to the level where I wouldn't mind losing the money I had put on it. I put $100 at a time on it, and then used it until it got down to $5 or $10 or so, then put more. This time, I got it down to $0.19.

I don't mind giving AT&T a whole $0.19. Well, I mind it, but I can write it off without a twinge. :)
